Taiwanese model I-Hua Wu joins Christy Turlington, Gigi Hadid, Adriana Lima, and Jourdan Dunn, among others, as the new global face of Maybelline New York.
She recently chatted with The Cut and talks about how her modelling started and the journey from a small country to become the face of a global beauty brand. She had never thought about modelling but surprisingly it was her mother who had initially signed her up to a local modelling competition. “It wasn’t to become a model,” said I-Hua “it was to meet other tall people like me.”
I-Hua was born and raised in a small but beautiful town in Taiwan. She started modeling in high school as a way to escape the bullying she received from schoolmates because of her height.
She entered a modeling contest in China in 2011, which is where her career began as she became the first Taiwanese winner of the New Silk Road competition. I-Hua has graced the catwalk of every major fashion capital including New York, London, Milan and Paris.
She has been featured in international editions of Vogue, ELLE, and Marie Claire to name a few. She was named the Star of Taiwan by the media in her hometown.
“It’s so special that I can represent Taiwanese models and bring them some attention.” she told The Cut. “But lots of Taiwanese models come here and work hard but have never been recognized because Taiwan is so small. I’m happy to shine some light on it.”
Currently I-Hua Wu lives in New York and is represented by Wilhelmina New York, MP Paris, and Major Models Milan.
