Yoga has never been a favourite activity for me. I always disliked it because it is so zen and spiritual. I only ever went to classes because my friend L wanted to go.. Or another friend KT who was training to be a yogi, but needed students to practice on. But then I discovered this one place due to a groupon L found, and fell head over heels.
Fireflow Yoga has a great set of yogis. My particular favourite is Amanda. She always starts off the practice with a story, an anecdote, a lesson, and us saying a very loud and long OM. Initially, I thought it was strange, but who ever said things will always be comfortable? I finally started doing it after the 3rd class. If you can’t let go, when can you ever? Sometimes it’s good to be put in a situation where you feel odd, but it allows you to open your mind up.
Amanda teaches ashtanga yoga, which is a flow class. It is not regimented like Bikram (which is also very hot and sweaty). This practice for me is fantastic, because I feel I am in motion, and in touch with my body. I learn to control different parts as well as figure out my breathing. I am strengthening my core and also trying to learn to let my mind relax. The latter is still challenging, but I hope to get to the point of peace (there is just too much going on upstairs).
When the practise is done, I feel more level headed and comfortable with myself. I am ready to tackle the day, and accomplish the goals I have set myself for the day.
Due to this new love for yoga, I also decided I needed a cute strap for my yoga mat. I met the lovely and beautiful artisan, Caitlin who owns her own brand on Etsy called TessDeanna, and decided what better way to show up to class! This strap is handmade with care and love, and I also got to pick the patterns I wanted. Now I arrive to class in style, without the mat being cumbersome and falling out of my towel strap, I previously used before.
