Canadians can now embrace the world of ‘limitless luxury shopping’. Avenue K recently opened access to highly coveted items from designers such as Isabel Marant, 3.1 Philip Lim, Proenza Schouler and many more.
Built on the success of Tokyo-based e-commerce model, Buyma, Avenue K is changing the way Canadians shop on a global level. We no longer have to be “the ones without” as Avenue K seeks out the best of upcoming styles and will even go after the items that are often considered beyond local availability. Consider the site a “concierge service” that will source any desired item even if it’s not currently featured on the website.
Canadian style expert, Susie Wall is the spokesperson for Avenue K. Born and raised in British Columbia, Susie brings her “witticism”, candid and girl-next-door demeanor to the forefront as she shares her style knowledge from the runways and red carpets on the site with her weekly top editor’s picks.
We had the opportunity to ask Susie a few questions (just before she reported from the Grammy’s in Los Angeles) about Avenue K and what she’s currently lusting after for her own closet!
AK staff are on the front line sourcing those “hard to get” after items…what’s the process? And how do you confirm authenticity?
SW: When it comes to finding those most sought-after items, the credit belongs to our personal shoppers, the people selling on Avenue K. They’ve been amazing so far – and managed to successfully find over 80% of the items requested on the site. They all have backgrounds as personal shoppers, stylists and merchandisers, so they bring a lot of experience and connections to the job.
In terms of authenticity, we’re able to guarantee this because we personally recruited and hired every seller on the site. We reviewed resumes, interviewed and trained them all, so we know the people selling are the real deal.
It’s not just for the rich and famous, right?
SW: We have a wide array of customers in every corner of the world. They are luxury and contemporary fashion lovers who want world-class service, convenience and ease. Our prices start from about $150 upwards and average about $500 per order.
What’s has been the most challenging item to fulfill or find?
SW: Celine’s pony hair loafers sell out immediately, therefore it’s a style we watch closely. To really go above and beyond for shoppers, we are personally emailing our Celine shoppers who want the ‘must have’ color each season.
What would you recommend we keep an eye on for this coming spring/summer season? Any favourites or must haves for you?
SW: I think a lot of fashion pros will embrace the Prada-style platform brogue. They take you to supermodel heights without the pain of sky high stilettos! That’s a fashion win-win. And I just got back from Kona, so I’m all about the elevated take on tropical that’s blowing our way. Even though I’m fair and freckled, I’ll be owning it – palm fronds and all. I also can’t wait to shop spring on Avenue K for pieces from designers like 10 Crosby Derek Lam – our shoppers love this line as much as me – and his spring collection has this earthy, high-end nomadic vibe which I adore. But there are so many strong collections for the coming season – Dries Van Noten, Elizabeth & James, Rag & Bone, Stella McCartney, Isabel Marant. That’s why choosing my editor’s picks for Avenue K is so fun – it’s like I’m curating a greatest hits collection every two weeks! Dangerous.
What’s on your style want list right now?
SW: I’m at a café in Venice Beach right now (I’m excited to be in LA to cover fashion on the Grammy red carpet this weekend for Canada’s CityTV), so I suddenly feel the need for a matte black beach cruiser garnished with some Sons of Anarchy-style shades. I’m also on the hunt for the perfect fitted, V-neck cricket sweater. I watched The Royal Tenenbaums the other night and Richie’s wardrobe reminded me that a luxe version of the Anglo original has long been on my list – so I’ll be sending my shopping request to the stylists at Avenue K to finally get the deal done!
How would you describe your own style in three words?
SW: Chameleonic. Childproof. Cool.
