Cinco de Mayo! Celebrate at El Catrin!

El Catrin is one of the New Mexican restaurants in Toronto for the last year, and all I have heard are rave reviews. Of course having a huge love affair with Mexico compelled me to go, and what better occasion but to celebrate Cinco de Mayo.

Cinco de Mayo has been a long standing tradition celebrated in the United States and Canada. It is also celebrated in different parts of Mexico, particularly in the state Puebla. So why not have a delicioso time in El Catrin?

My good girl friend and I were stuck in Toronto while our men have gone diving in Mexico for a week, so we decided to have a little bit of Mexico ourselves.

To start off we got the guacamole en la mesa and chips which had just the right herbs and spice. The baja taco was next and I have to say, I am usually not a fan of deep fried fish tacos, but this one hit the spot for me. There wasn’t a lot of batter, nor was the fish too dry. This was a pleasant surprise for me.

The next dish we got was their corn (esquites). This was so yummy, I couldn’t figure out what they put in this dish without Mmm-ing with delight on each bite. The tuna ceviche (atun) was okay, I know I have definitely had better in Mexico, but most things do taste better from the motherland. Not to totally discredit this dish, I loved the watermelon accents.

One of the best dishes of the night was the the octopus (pulpos carnitas). It was tender and not overly marinated. The octopus was perfectly scrumptious and my tummy was blissfully happy.

My friend and I can’t say no to one more thing, because dinner is not dinner without dessert. We got an order of churros which was deep fried beautifully. We had chocolate, caramel and strawberry all to dip from.

I got a mango margarita to pair my meal, and it was a touch on the sour side. But overall this restaurant was happening with gorgeous dias de la muerte interior designs. The service was impeccable and the vibe was perfect for all sorts of people. Will I go again…? That’s a hell yeah!Processed with Moldiv
