Local designers Regan Hayes and Vanessa Marino are the artisans behind Blackbird – a wickedly stunning line of jewellery. The one-of-a-kind pieces are highly coveted with the appeal of their heavy layering techniques using such materials as gunmetal chain, rhinestones and quartz.
Each piece in their latest “Occult” collection is as powerful as the wearer. This is not like wearing a dainty flower, my friends!
Regan Hayes grew up in the country on a horse farm. She spent much time exploring her creative side through arts. She taught herself how to sew and eventually attended design school at George Brown College. Upon graduation, Hayes began making custom evening wear.
Vanessa Marino grew up in an artistic household. Her mother always encouraged her to paint, draw and express herself. Marino experimented with various art forms with great attention to details. Marino landed in design school at George Brown College and after graduating, went on to working as a pattern drafter.
Named one of the top ten local Toronto jewellery designers this year, Blackbird is worn by the likes of Emily Haines and Chantal Kreviazuk. Their pieces can be found on their website iheartblackbird.com as well as selected retailers such as BRIKA (pop up lifestyle shop inside The Hudson’s Bay Company’s Queen Street store and online) and Coal Miner’s Daughter. Blackbird has also recently collaborated with 889 Yoga Studio to create a yoga mat bag for Holt Renfrew’s H Project.
