The fall harvest season has us thinking about warm and cozy everything. Comfort foods and relaxing on crisp nights is what makes the season so appealing. It’s no surprise that we also change what we drink from season to season. But where do you start? I’ve come across an interesting “Hoptorial” pack created by Muskoka Brewery that offers some unique tasting that are perfect with those evening roasts and stews.
Nestled in the heart of Muskoka, Muskoka Brewery handcrafts premium beers as unique and refreshing as the region they’re from. Founders Gary McMullen and Kirk Evans opened Muskoka Brewery in Bracebridge, Ontario in 1996 with its flagship Muskoka Cream Ale. Today, the brewery employs a passionate band of more than 70 craft beer lovers, and is one of the fastest-growing craft breweries in Canada, with an award-winning beer portfolio and the spirit of the Canadian outdoors.
Some fun facts about HOPS!
- Hops are the female flowers of the hop plant, Humulus lupulus, and are primarily used today to add natural flavour to the beer
- Interestingly, only the female hop is used to brew beer.
- Generally, hops are added during the boiling of the brewing process, adding IBUs and flavour, and in the whirlpool, post boil for hop aroma.
- It takes three years for the perennial hop vine (also known as bine) to mature. Hop vines can grow up to a foot in a single day.
- Hops are also known to have anti-bacterial qualities, and have been used as an all-natural deodorant, to treat anxiety and even insomnia.
The pack includes three of Muskoka Brewery’s most popular and most famous IPA’s: Detour, Mad Tom and Twice as Mad Tom – not only for the occasional beer drinker but great for those who consider themselves afficianados! There are two bottles of each inside the box.
So, what’s inside the pack and how do you enjoy them?
Start with Detour, which features fine tropical fruit aromas and a fresh finish, built for easy drinking with a unique twist. With an IBU of 30, this is a truly sessionable IPA with big hop flavours created with only three ingredients – water, malted barley and hops – Eldorado, Citra and Sorachi – and 4.3 per cent alcohol content. Detour is all-natural, unfiltered and can be paired with garden salad, thai mango chicken, sesame chicken salad and shrimp cocktail.
Move next to Mad Tom, a craft beer with a bolder hop flavour. This IPA is dry-hopped with the Chinook and Centennial variety. Mad Tom is a popular brew with an IBU of 64 that offers a real depth of flavour with a crisp citrusy undertone like no other. This beer pairs well with spicy dishes, smoked fish, burgers and sharp cheese.
Finish with Twice as Mad Tom, for a bold, fresh flavour. An aggressively twice-dry hopped beer with an IBU of 71, this IPA delivers a definitive hop aroma and unbashedly bold flavour. Twice as Mad Tom pairs well with grilled meats, Indian cuisine, pulled pork and sharp cheese.
The Muskoka Hoptorial pack is available in-stores now and sold at The Beer Store and Muskoka Brewery’s retail store in Bracebridge, Ontario in packs of six x 355 ml bottles for $14.05.
