I’m not sure how it happened, but all of the sudden the holiday season is upon us and our weekends are beginning to fill up with parties, get-togehters, dinners and even kid’s playdates. There are days when I don’t know if I’m coming or going, especially with entertaining friends and family at home. I fell like I’m scrambling to get a menu together to prep, to cook, to serve and that’s on top of our busy schedules of work, Christmas shopping, our kids’ winter concerts and everything else in between.
So, when I was approached by St-Hubert to test out their new appetizer, Poutine Bites, I was like..ummm…poutine in a bite sized appy? SIGN. ME UP! I love poutine, I mean I L-O-V-E poutine! What’s not to love about crispy french fries smothered in gravy and cheese curds?! The Montreal-based chicken restaurant franchise, St-Hubert knows their poutine, and I still have very fond memories of their restaurants as a child. As a kid, our family would go to St-Hubert where my brother and I would steal each other’s fries and me dunking them into their delicious brown gravy. Now take those fries, throw some gravy and cheese together; it’s a party in my mouth. Combine that iconic delicious dish and turn it inside out and you have an easy-to-serve finger food, well hello!
This past weekend we had some friends over for dinner, and thought it was the perfect time to test out the Poutine Bites. It’s super simple to prepare: 450F oven for 8 minutes or 4 to 5 minutes in my Airfryer. The verdict (insert drum roll…): it was DEE-LISH! The kids devoured them, and the adults enjoyed them just as much. The kids loved the ooey gooey mozzarella and cheddar cheese combo inside. It’s like a mozzarella stick but a thousand times better because it’s coated in a crispy potato exterior. The game changer…the burst of gravy inside! See, it’s poutine all in one bite! Just one caveat though: keep an eye on them as they bake otherwise the poutine bite will split ope and your cheese and gravy will escape and you’re left with poutine carnage. Not that it’s a bad thing, actually.
This appetizer is pretty versatile because it satisfies those who crave something deep fried or baked or savoury or creamy, but it’s that warm yummy poutine gravy that envelopes the cheese that makes me go nom-nom! I imagine myself picking up a can of St-Hubert’s gravy as extra dipping sauce. I’m saucy like that!
My kids are already asking for these to be added to our New Year’s eve dinner menu where we have a tradition of eating appetizers all night. What I love about these poutine bites is how handy they are to keep in your freezer and warm them up in your oven. So, for your next happy app hour, you have to try these Poutine Bites.
St-Hubert’s Poutine Bites can be found in the freezer section in grocery stores nationally.
