Impromptu Picnic and how to impress your friends

Many of us grew up with extended family picnics happening every weekend over the summer months. Aunties, uncles and cousins would all show up for a full day of relaxation, eating, fun, and more eating. The parents brought food for last several meals and now looking back, I can’t believe how much prep work they did how it all fit in their cars! But we still fondly remember those days of spitting watermelon seeds and lazy days under the shaded trees as multi-generational gatherings were more the norm rather than an event.

When I had recently decided to invite a couple of friends out for an impromptu picnic in the park and surprise them as I would show up with no food. LOL okay… I was keen on checking out FOODORA App – the food delivery service. I had learned that the service would deliver to the park so I thought it’d be fun to impress my friends and Foodora has quite a few restaurants on the roster that I love!

IMG_0673We had arrived at the park. I had the app already on my phone and I searched up “picnic”. Then, up popped a few nearby restaurant options that FOODORA could deliver from. We chose Fresh — since we were outdoors and it was a warm day, a fulfilling but not too heavy lunch was much desired.

We found our perfect quaint little picnic spot and laid down our blankets and selected from Fresh’s online menu through the app — it even included their much loved juices and smoothies! We got pretty excited! I’m a big fan of their Fresh Bowls (try the Dragon which comes with grilled zucchini & tofu steaks with a miso gravy with other goodness and customize with soba noodles, yum!) and their salads are massive enough to also share. We went for the All-Star salad that was made of quinoa & marinated adzuki beans on shredded kale and goji berries with a side of grilled sweet potato and tofu steaks. Pretty seamless. What I love the most is that I don’t need to do physically do any cash or credit card transactions – the service is like uber — they retain your credit card information and everything is done at their head office. Any questions about charges are dealt with their customer service. I also noticed that you can place orders in advance for a specific drop off time, if you’re organized enough to do that. Also, designated (and logical) drop off points at parks should be confirmed. Foodora has specific spots for drop off which makes sense since some parks are too big for them to come looking for you.

Speaking of customer service. There was apparently a slight delay in the order being delivered on time (like 5 minutes) – while I didn’t actually notice since we were laughing away catching up on funny stories, I was notified immediately on my phone with courteous customer service. Hey, you know how traffic is in downtown Toronto at times? Ugh. But they were proactive in ensuring that I knew where my order was so I wouldn’t be standing at the gate waiting. The food arrived fresh and I had transferred the food quickly onto my own serving plates for a pretty presentation. Ta-da! Yes, my friends were impressed! They want to do it again and next time we’ll try another park and another restaurant. A fun way to take advantage of the outdoors!

I checked into Foodora for some other picnic area suggestions as well as just a sample of which restaurants they deliver from. But there are so many great parks to visit in the city – I would suggest you explore further…

HARBOURFRONT CENTRE: will deliver from Little Fin, True True, Glory Hole Doughnuts

FOODORA app gives food lovers the option for food delivery to home, office or elsewhere in Canada (currently in Toronto, Montreal) as well as in 30 other countries. The selection of restaurants go beyond the usual and offers quick delivery by car or by bike within minutes or you can pre-order for designated desired times. I’ve found the app very easy to use and love navigating menus right on my device.  The app is available on iOS and Android.
